ABOUT ME
My research focused primarily on Portuguese graphic novels and processes of inter-semiotic translation from romance to the medium of comics. I have a particular interest in visual qualities of literature and its intersections with art, namely, theory of ekphrasis, Portuguese and Brazilian concrete poetry, constrained writing; visual cultures and intermedia crossings. I have recently developed a new undergraduate module in Iberian Visual Cultures in collaboration with the Hispanic Studies. My monograph on Portuguese graphic novel as a literary genre was published by Peter Lang one month ago.
Over the last few years, I extended my area of research to the lusophone colonial context. I am interested in how post-colonialism manifest through the intersections between different Lusophone narratives, both visual and literary. How transnationalism impacts the culture in Portuguese-speaking Africa. My last oral presentations of work focused on the cinematographic dimension of the Angolan novel A General Theory of Oblivion by Agualusa and on Lusophone literature as a transnational palimpsest. My work also reflects on how the internet and digital technologies shape, transform and reconfigure the way we learn. This has resulted in a project I am currently leading: Introduction to Common European Framework and the Companion – a supplementary self-managed (digital) toolkit for the Portuguese language for A1 level, funded by National Forum, Ireland.
